The first phase includes the recovery period following injury and surgery (if performed) until the knee is 'quiet' - swelling eliminated, pain decreased, and strength beginning to return.
Regaining muscle strength, control and balance is the main focus during this phase. This stage sets the foundation for the difficult progressions and high joint forces in later stages.
More dynamic movements are performed and relearned such as change of direction, running, jumping, hopping and agility drills. Landing biomechanics are assessed for symmetry.
Visuomotor and neurocognitive exercises are progressed during this phase. The focus shifts from restricted training to unrestricted return to sport, activity and life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everyone’s recovery journey is different and depends on many factors. However, it is well established in the research that returning to sports prior to 9 months after surgery is not recommended. We designed our All-inclusive program around this timeline to ensure a safe return to activity.

Yes, the amount of sessions that you require during each phase will be determined collaboratively with your therapist. We also require a 9-month commitment to ensure the best recovery and outcomes (which is in-line with scientific consensus).

Many of the latest innovations in rehab after surgery require frequent sessions to have an effect (i.e. blood flow restriction therapy, visuomotor training, etc). We designed this program in order to eliminate the cost uncertainty surrounding a proper recovery from ACL surgery.

We’ve designed this from the ground up based on clinical expertise, personal experience and the latest research in ACL rehabilitation.

We are one of the only clinics in Canada to provide many of the latest technologies used in professional sports teams and cutting edge research laboratories (biomechanical movement analysis, force dynamometry, etc).

Absolutely! The principles of recovery after an ACL injury remain the same even if you haven’t undergone surgery. However, you may progress quicker through certain stages, particularly the initial phase.
